Job Description

POSITION SCOPE:

 This position involves operational and mechanical fault finding, troubleshooting, adjustments, tests, repairs and checks of all mechanical equipment, piping and valves; and perform both corrective and preventative maintenance.

 POSITION OVERVIEW:

This position ensures the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a power plant station.  The position holder must be flexible and versatile and willing to perform the duties of a rotational shift system worker or a day work as needed.

DUTIES AND TASKS:

 The incumbent will assume responsibilities related to:

 Health, Safety and Environment by:  

    • Ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
    • Ensuring compliance with all environmental and health standards, and
    • Completing all required HSE training.

Operations by:

  •  Safely ensuring the efficient and effective function of all power plant equipment by
    • Recording hourly readings of power plant and interpreting data.
    • Logging and reporting equipment defects and/or defects in the computer database.
    • Reporting changes in power plant equipment to control room staff.
    • Maintaining sufficient and correct lubrication to the bearings of the equipment in operation.
    • Keeping equipment and areas clean of oil and other hazards.
    • Cleaning and changing filters and strainers.
    • Checking for condensate build-up in air system.
  • Performing fire and safety checks, confined space entry tests, and tests on all water.
  • Taking engine lube, and fuel oil samples for testing.
  • Isolating power plant station equipment.
  • Transferring bunker fuels and lubes to storage tanks.
  • Cleaning and maintaining fuel treatment plant.
  • Assisting with the writing of standard operating procedures.
  • Aiding with the maintenance of the engine when it is out of service.
  • Assisting in the preparation of event and critical incident reports.
  • Performing other operational tasks as directed.

Maintenance by:

  • Organizing, planning and supervising the work crew.
  • Maintaining technical documentation, drawings and instruction books.
  • Completing parts purchase order request forms and parts requisition forms.
  • Signing off on completed defects and recording comments on defects.
  • Assisting in root cause analysis of failures and preparing technical reports on equipment failures.
  • Maintaining preventive and corrective maintenance documentation.
  • Assisting with job planning and securing necessary tools and materials.
  • Overhauling, repairing, replacing, installing and maintaining all power plant station equipment and systems, including but not limited to:
    • Working from manufacturer’s instructions, blueprints, manuals, or sketches with limited supervision.
    • Installing and aligning motors and pumps and repair and overhaul oil burners.
    • Checking lubricants, water levels and lube oil coolers.
    • Cleaning radiators, filters and heat exchangers.
    • Maintaining strainers, piping and components.
    • Conducting leak test and test for proper operations of valves.
    • Maintaining drainage system and storm drain system.
  • Ensuring that all crew members adhere to safe work practices
  • Carrying out pipe fitting, valve overhauls and pump repairs.

ACADEMIC/ SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate.
  • BGCSE Certificate in Math, English and Science.
  • City Guilds of London Diesel Operators Certificate or equivalent.
  • Extensive, proven experience and expertise in the mechanical maintenance of power plant equipment.

OTHER TASKS & DUTIES:

  • Providing leadership, where needed, and assist in training
  • Maintaining effective oral and written communication with co-workers, supervisors and management.
  • Keeping abreast with new and evolving technology for operations and maintenance procedures in the electric power industry.
  • Completing all required annual training.
  • Performing welding work, and operating cranes and vacuums, when necessary.
  • Performing machine work, as necessary.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to test engine alarms and trips.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, piping and instrumentation schematics.
  • Willingness to participate in personal development and safety training.
  • Willingness to cover shifts when needed.
  • Willingness to assist and support others.
