Mathematics Teacher

Job Description

The Island School is a high school study-abroad semester program on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas, part of a multi-faceted non-profit organization with ambitious research, education, and conservation objectives. With the campus and surrounding ocean as our laboratories, we partner with a world-class science research facility. Together, we engage in the process of inquiry in order to discover sustainable solutions to real world problems. The Island School experience culminates in the beginning of a lifelong educational journey, with more self-confident students leaving as engaged global citizens, empowered to be active leaders of their generation.

Position Description

The Island School Mathematics course explores how quantitative analysis of systems and scientific data can help us better understand, and affect change in, the world around us. Applicants for this position should have a background, skill set, and passion in mathematics and how problems can be addressed through a variety of approaches that branch across, and are not confined in, traditional high school content areas such as Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus, and Statistics. While the primary responsibility of our teachers is to deliver progressive, thoughtful coursework in their area of expertise, they must also be able to juggle myriad responsibilities beyond academics. This includes supporting the morning exercise program, doing chores alongside the students, and countless smaller duties associated with running a boarding program, often requiring a presence into the evenings and over the weekends. Medical training, experience in SCUBA instruction, kayaking and outdoor leadership skills are also beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching multiple sections of 12 students in Mathematics
  • Advisor for 4-6 students
  • Residential Duty
  • Morning Exercise and Chores with community
  • Kayak program support, if applicable
  • Cultural Contact program support, if applicable

This is an overview of the position, but responsibilities are not limited to the above list.

Compensation

Compensation is dependent on experience and may include housing and a health and dental plan, as well as salary.
