Graphic Designer

Job Description

The Graphic Designer will produce promotional and informational visual design solutions to communicate University of The Bahamas messages, goals and brand, with high visual impact. The graphic design solutions will include, but are not limited to, print and digital media for internal and external constituents. Products and activities may include conceptualizing, designing and producing marketing and branding collateral to maximize the University’s presence online, periodic newsletters, publications (including annual and private giving reports and magazines), exhibitions, displays, advertising, social media visuals as well as other relevant media. The Graphic Designer is also responsible for contributing to the completion of resource costing (ink, paper or other media) per project design.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Graphic Designer will be required to perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

Collaborating with and interpreting stakeholder needs to develop graphic design concepts to suit these requirements;
Using a variety of media to achieve artistically detailed outputs including, where relevant, illustration of rough sketches;
Producing accurate and high quality work on deadline;
Engaging creative thinking to produce new ideas and concepts;
Preparing the development of design briefs including contribution of ideas and designs;
Keeping abreast of developments in IT, particularly regarding design programmes;
Working as a member of a team of printers, copywriters, photographers, other designers, web developers, marketing and public relations specialists and other relevant external vendors and/or consultants;
Maintaining a catalogue of University photos and other relevant graphic files;
Developing reports related to costs and production timelines;
Performing related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a closely related area or the equivalent;
A minimum of six (6) years’ post qualification work experience; and
A minimum of five (5) years’ experience working as part of a team performing graphic design duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

Design concepts and presentation with the use of relevant software including Illustrator, Freehand, Photoshop, 3D Studio, Dreamweaver, Flash, Adobe Suite, In-design and Pages in Macintosh platform at an advanced level of proficiency;
Principles and practices of design including pantone matching systems, layout and composition, typography, conceptual design approaches and pre-press production;
Graphic imaging systems and scanning devices;
Heavy duty printers and procedures of print software;
Paper stock options;
Modern office practices and procedures; and
Web design and other interactive resources and related coding.

Ability to:

Prepare professional graphic designs and layout of materials using both Macintosh and Windows-based computer hardware and software;
Consistently meet quality and accuracy standards set internally by management;
Attend to detail and manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously;
Exercise sound judgement and work independently and as well as a member of a team;
Maintain archives and organize files;
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Additionally, the Graphic Designer will be a self-starter having the ability to work with minimum supervision. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong work ethic, display a willingness to learn new technology and have an overall pleasant disposition.
