Engineer I (Telecommunications & Control Systems)

Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Works with minimal supervision and provides electrical, telecommunication and control system technical expertise/support for all Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) systems as required.

POSITION SCOPE:

This position reports to the Director of Engineering and is responsible for providing engineering and technical expertise.

 Health, Safety & Environmental:

  • Ensure compliance with all environmental and health standards.
  • Ensure completion of all health, safety and environmental training.

 

Duties and Tasks are to:

  • Support GBPC on all telecommunication and control systems related issues.
  • Support improvement programs for safety, quality, security and or reliability as per related Telecommunications, DCS/SCADA systems.
  • Support the engineering team in the design, development, installation, commissioning and repair of telecommunications networks along with control systems for in-line and/or new equipment.
  • Maintain telecommunications, DCS/SCADA hardware and software systems, equipment files, drawings and databases.
  • Act as administrator, where necessary.
  • Develop and maintain procedures, specifications and standards related to the telecommunications, DCS/SCADA and PLC systems.
  • Back up files trends on a regular basis as necessary.
  • Organize and oversee (or conduct) appropriate routine tests and preventative maintenance tasks on Telecommunications, DCS/SCADA systems.
  • Ensure all engineering changes to the Telecommunications, DCS/SCADA systems.
  • Conduct training, as necessary, in programming and configuration of telecommunications, DCS/SCADA systems as directed.
  • Oversee and/or liaise with consultants and other technical contractors on telecommunications, DCS/SCADA systems.
  • Audit GBPC groups to ensure compliance to relevant procedures, standards and specifications.
  • Development electrical, instrument specifications, calibration and datasheets.
  • Read and update P&I diagrams (DCS/SCADA functions, interlock, etc.)
  • Configure and test simple peer to peer networking.
  • Work with IT where there is an overlap of duties as per IEEE802.3 standard for communication.
  • Keep abreast with evolving technology and techniques in the telecommunications and/or control system industry.
  • Perform other tasks within capabilities as directed.
  • Identify and analyze power system failure modes, perform root cause analysis and produce written incident reports describing power outage events.
  • Perform electrical power and/or network system documentation including: system configuration, equipment ratings and settings.
  • Ensure proper security measures and disaster recovery systems are implemented for the Telecommunication and DCS/SCADA networks.
  • Review system logs.

Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements are that the applicant:

  • Bachelor of science degree in Engineering or related discipline, Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Previous experience working with telecommunication and control equipment such as microwave radio, fibre optics, multiplexers, mobile radio, telephony and SCADA.
  • Good working knowledge of RF theory and components.
  • Experienced in LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, SNMP and VOIP technologies is a plus.
  • Certifications in CCNA, CCNP is desirable.
  • Experience designing machinery control panels (I/O design, power management, sensors, drives, user interfaces, component design).
  • PLC programming experience.
  • Experience in specifying and/or maintaining field devices and networks.
  • Knowledge of IEC (European) standard along with ISA is desirable
